Job Summary:   The Lead Cook is responsible for planning, preparing, and serving attractive, appetizing home and dining room meals which comply with SeniorAge nutritional requirements and health safety regulations.  S/he maintains a clean, safe kitchen, food storage, serving and dining area at all times.  S/he supervises all food service assistants, both paid and volunteer, and cross trains employees in all kitchen positions.  The Lead Cook helps customers as necessary and understands that s/he is responsible at all times to create friendly and welcoming hospitality for all customers, volunteers, and employees.  Hospitality is an integral part of this position.

Job Qualifications

Graduation from high school or a GED and two year's experience cooking in a restaurant, school, or for large groups.  Experience may be substituted for education on a year for year basis for a maximum of two years.

  1. Competence in planning, safely preparing, and graciously serving nutritious, appetizing meals to customers in a healthful, appealing, and timely manner.
  2. Competence in the correct methods of safe operation, cleaning, and maintenance of kitchen utensils, equipment, and appliances.
  3. Procurement and maintenance of all Certifications required for the position by SeniorAge: Food Handlers Certificate must be obtained in the first 90 days, ServSafe in first year.
  4. Competence in reading, understanding, interpreting, and applying the policies and procedures of SeniorAge regarding food planning, menus, preparation, storage, inventory, and service.
  5. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records related to food, meals, equipment inventory, procurement, service, preparation, and cost in a timely manner. This includes the ability to perform basic mathematical functions accurately.
  6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, volunteers, board members, customers, and vendors.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Reading and writing at a 10th Grade level is required.
  8. Ability to provide effective supervision to paid subordinate staff and/or volunteers.
  9. Ability to follow and instruct others in job-related safety.
  10. Ability to safely lift a maximum of 50 pounds.
